Toronto Public Health is currently investigating its first suspected case of monkeypox in an adult male resident in their 40’s with recent contact with an individual who traveled to Montreal. Health officials are working to confirm the diagnosis, but say he is recovering in hospital and his condition is stable.
They say he had contact with someone who had recently traveled to Montreal, where health officials said Saturday there are five lab-confirmed cases and 15 more under investigation.
While the risk to the general public from this infection is very low, members of the public may have been exposed to monkeypox in the following settings:
The rare disease comes from the same family of viruses that causes smallpox, which the World Health Organization declared eradicated in 1980
