Someone with very deep pockets has paid $1.4 million for the sweater Wayne Gretzky was wearing when Edmonton won the Stanley Cup in 1988.
The director of operations at Grey Flannel Auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona says the sweater still had champagne stains from the post game celebration.
The jersey, with 99 on the sleeves and a “C” on the chest denoting Gretzky’s captaincy, also has repair marks.
The Gretzky sale dethrones Paul Henderson’s 1972 Summit Series sweater from the previous record for being the most expensive hockey jersey ever sold. It went for $1.2 million.
The buyer of the Gretzky sweater plans to remain anonymous.
