Police Chief James Ramer will reportedly apologize to Toronto’s Black community Wednesday morning as the service prepares to release data laying out the extent to which race has played a role in its use-of-force and strip searches.

Apparently, the data will show an over-representation of certain communities in policing; almost three years after being mandated by the province to document race-based data in use-of-force incidents.

Toronto police’s race-based data collection policy followed a recommendation from a 2018 Ontario Human Rights Commission report, that found a Black person in the city was almost 20-times more likely to be shot and killed by police.

After being mandated to collect that data, the police service also committed to gather race-based data on strip searches, which began January 2020.
