Andrea Horwath is dropping hints that she may run for mayor of Hamilton, but the outgoing Ontario NDP leader says in a statement that she’s not yet ready to make “any announcements.”

Horwath thanks current Mayor Fred Eisenberger, who is not seeking re-election in October, for endorsing her as a strong candidate.

The deadline to file nomination papers in August 19th.

Horwath was re-elected as MPP in Hamilton Centre, but her party fell to 31 seats from 40, still as the official opposition.

She says she has a serious responsibility in front of her as MPP for Hamilton Centre and is “committed to doing everything possible to support a successful transition to an interim NDP leader,” but also did not rule our a run for Hamilton’s mayor.

“I’m not ready today to make any announcements about Hamilton’s municipal election. But I can tell you that my heart is always in Hamilton,” Horwath said.
