It the first day of summer and the longest day of the year and for the first time since 2019, National Indigenous Peoples day is being held in person.

It was kicked off this morning in Toronto with a sunrise ceremony at Nathan Phillips square.

During the ceremony,  about 200 people attended to light the sacred fire and take tobacco in their left hands, because that’s where it’s closest to the heart.

This is the 26th anniversary of National Indigenous People’s Day.  It celebrates and recognizes First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultures.
