The U.S. House has passed a bipartisan bill in what is the first major federal gun safety legislation in decades.

The final vote count was 234-193 with 14 Republican House members voting with Democrats to pass the measure. The U.S. Senate passed the bill in a late-night vote Thursday.

Among the commitments include: millions of dollars for mental health, school safety, crisis intervention programs and incentives for states to include juvenile records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

The entire package represents the most significant new federal legislation to address gun violence in 28 years.

However, enthusiasm for the bill’s passage was certainly overshadowed on Friday on word that the U.S. Supreme Court had overturned Roe v. Wade, which came into effect in 1973, which means there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion.
