Canada’s telecom companies have just two months to come up with a deal to improve their network reliability.

That call to action from Industry Ministry Francois-Philippe Champagne who met with the heads of the major companies virtually today.

The meeting was called after Friday’s major outage by Rogers Communications that impacted 12 million customers including 911 services.

“I want them to understand that in no uncertain terms they understand how Canadians saw the situation to be unacceptable and that we need to take immediate initials steps to improve the resiliency of our network in Canada,” Champagne told reporters.

He directed Canada’s telecom companies to come up with deals on emergency roaming, mutual assistance during outages, and an emergency communication protocol.

Champagne also says the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission will investigate the Rogers outage.
