There is good news for VIA Rail passengers. Service continues on Tuesday uninterrupted!

Representatives with VIA and Unifor have averted a strike that would have seen some 2400 workers walk off the job.

After pushing the deadline to a final time of 11:59 Monday night, they’ve announced they reached a tentative deal.

Both sides also say VIA passenger service will continue to operate normally pending ratification of the agreement which will be retroactive to the beginning of this year and in effect through to December 31st, 2024.

A statement from VIA Rail says the tentative agreement gives travelling Canadians a break from the uncertainty of a possible shutdown.

“Fighting back against the concessions that VIA proposed wasn’t easy, but the resolve, commitment and solidarity of our VIA Rail members, helped the bargaining committees to push forward and achieve this tentative agreement,” said Scott Doherty, Lead Negotiator and Executive Assistant to the National President. “I want to thank our members and the travelling public for their patience and support, while we continued to negotiate past the strike deadline to achieve this agreement. Without them this deal would not have been possible.”
