Imagine living through this heat without air conditioning.

That is the reality for elderly residents in 15 percent of Ontario’s long term care homes.

Legislation passed at Queen’s Park last year requires Ontario nursing homes to provide air conditioning in all resident bedrooms by June 22nd of this year.

But as of July 19th, Ontario’s Ministry of Long Term Care reported 90 of 627 homes are not fully air conditioned, although apparently have designated cooling areas for residents.

When asked about the reason for the delay, ministry spokesperson Mark Nesbitt said global supply chain issues are impacting air conditioning unit delivery timelines.

He explained in some cases visitor restrictions are preventing contractors from entering homes due to COVID-19 outbreaks.

In addition, he says, complex structural challenges have contributed to delays.
