Andrea Horwath is expected to announce on Tuesday she is running to be mayor of Hamilton.
The former longtime Ontario NDP leader has scheduled an announcement at Hamilton’s Commonwealth Square at 9:30am.
Horwath, who turns 60 on municipal election day October 24th, was a Hamilton city councillor for several years before the making the move to provincial politics in 2004, when she was elected as an NDP MPP in Hamilton.
She became leader in 2009, and leader of the opposition both in 2018 and in the provincial election this past June. But, it was during her concession speech, Horwath announced she would be stepping down.
Outgoing Hamilton mayor Fred Eisenberger said last month he would not be seeking another term in office and publicly floated Andrea Horwath’s name as a person who might make a good candidate for the position.
At the time, Horwath said her heart is always in Hamilton, but she wasn’t ready then to make any announcements.
