Pandemic darling Shopify is letting go one-in-ten of its employees.
The Ottawa e-commerce company CEO, Tobi Lutke, says most worked in recruiting, support and sales.
Lutke says Shopify will also do away with ”over-specialized and duplicate” roles as well as groups that he feels were ”convenient to have but too far removed from building products.”
He adds COVID-19 created a surge in demand for Shopify’s software as consumers shifted to making more purchases online.
Shopify bet that would leap ahead by five or 10 years from pre-pandemic predictions. However, Lutke says that’s proven not to be the case as Canadians return to their previous shopping habits, forcing the company to make the cuts.
