Calls for a complete overhaul at the executive leadership level of Hockey Canada continue to broaden.

Hockey Canada has come under intense scrutiny for the use of its membership-generated ”National Equity Fund” to pay settlements related to sexual assault and abuse allegations dating back more than 30 years.

The national governing body for Canadian hockey says it has paid out $7.6 million for nine such settlements dating back to 1989.

A sizable portion of the funds, $6.8 million, was used for settling cases involving serial abuser and former coach Graham James.

The fund was also used to pay for the services of a law firm that has been investigating an alleged sexual assault in 2018 that has Hockey Canada executives, including president and CEO Scott Smith, forced to appear before a Commons committee.

Scott says he believes he has the experience and leadership capabilities to turn things around, but former abuse victim Sheldon Kennedy is calling on Hockey Canada’s executive leadership team to step down.
