Saying she doesn’t like the word ”retirement”, Serena Williams says she would rather prefer to think of her plans to step away from the sport next month as ”evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.”
The 23-time Grand Slam champ made the announcement in an essay in Vogue magazine, pointing out she’ll soon be 41.
”These days, if I have to choose between building my tennis resume and building my family, I choose the latter.”
She and husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, have a daughter, Olympia, who turns 5 September 1.
”I’m not looking for some ceremonial, final on-court moment,” Williams wrote.
”I’m terrible at goodbyes, the world’s worst.”
Williams is playing in Toronto this week at the National Bank Open, which leads into the U.S. Open; the year’s final Grand Slam event, that starts August 29 in New York.
