British drug regulators have become the first in the world to authorize an updated version of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine that aims to protect against the original virus and the Omicron variant.
The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency has given the green light to Moderna’s combination “bi-valent” vaccine, which will be used as an adult booster shot.
The updated vaccine — known as a bivalent because it targets two variants — is expected to be available to adults as a booster jab from the fall after receiving the go-ahead from the U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
Each dose of the booster shot will target both the original COVID-19 virus,. first confirmed in March, 2020 and the Omicron variant that was detected in November.
