Of note; today is the 129th anniversary of the birth of Canadian music legend Sir Ernest MacMillan who was born in Mimico, in Toronto’s west end, in 1893.

He was a noted composer, conductor, principal of the Royal Conservatory of Music and Dean of the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto.

Of note to our listeners; Classical FM morning show hosts Jean Stilwell and Adi Braun have a personal connection to MacMillan.

Jean’s mother Margaret Stilwell was a noted Contralto and Adi’s father Victor Braun, a renowned baritone, both of whom performed in an Oratorio, conducted by Ernest MacMillan.

MacMillan was knighted by King George V in 1935 which was the first time a musician rom outside the UK was so honoured.

He died in 1973.
