Jerry Allison, the drummer who kept the beat for Buddy Holly on songs like “That’ll Be the Day” has died at the age of 82.

Allison co-wrote “That’ll be the Day” and another Holly hit “Peggy Sue,” which was actually named for Allison’s then-girlfriend and future wife.

Holly died in a a plane crash in 1959.

After that, Allison shepherded Holly’s back up band “The Crickets” through several lineups.

He later worked with music legends like Sir Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Johnny Rivers and Waylon Jennings and in 2012 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Jerry Allison died Monday.  No cause of death was given.
