Long Term Care Minister Paul Calandra is admitting that patients could be charged if they say no to a care home not of their choosing.
“Yes, are there incidents where hospitals will be charging, absolutely,” Calandra told reporters at Queen’s Park. “If somebody refuses to move into a home of preferred choice then yes, should a hospital charge them, absolutely because we need those spaces for patients who need acute care, need them for surgeries. ”
New legislation allows a hospital to place a patient to a long term care home with or without consent. University Health Network says it’s happening once or twice a year but that discussion of high fees is enough to convince the move.
But critics question whether the payment option will now be used more frequently.
Hospitals are still waiting for regulations that the government says will be published soon after the law is passed.
