A Canadian music legend has been recognized by one of the must prestigious music schools in the United States.
Joni Mitchell now has two more prized possessions; an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music in Boston and a snazzy new beret that says “Dr. Joni Mitchell.”
In accepting the award, the 78-year old who was born in Alberta and grew up in Saskatchewan recalled a childhood piano teacher who rapped her knuckles with a ruler and said, “Why would you want to play by ear when you can have the masters under your fingertips!”
When Mitchell told her that the masters had to play by ear to create the music in the first place and got her knuckles whacked again.
Mitchell concluded by saying getting the doctorate was her “moment of revenge.”
