With a week and a half until children go back to class in Ontario, members of the COVID-19 science advisory table have decided not to make a formal recommendation on whether to reintroduce mandatory masking in schools.

A report, released Thursday, says they could not reach a consensus regarding if and when masking should be mandated again.

Dr. Upton Allen is co-chair of the advisory table, and says they do agree on other measures.

“A recognition of the importance of an enhanced indoor air quality, environmental cleaning and disinfection, a recognition of the importance of hand hygiene as well as vaccination. These are really important permanent measures,” Dr. Allen told CP24.

Back to school day, Tuesday September 6th, marks the first time returning students will not be required to wear masks in public schools since the start of the pandemic.

According to the latest Ontario government numbers, weekly COVID-19 data shows most indicators were unchanged from a week ago, though experts at Public Health Ontario say rates appear to be increasing among school-aged children
