“Is God Is,” a story of sisterly revenge, has garnered a leading 10 nominations in the general theatre division at the Dora Mavor Moore Awards, including best production.

The co-production between Obsidian Theatre Company, Necessary Angel Theatre Company and Canadian Stage nabbed performance nods for each of its leads — Oyin Oladejo and Vanessa Sears.

Described as a Spaghetti-western-meets-Afropunk thriller, the play also received nominations for two of its featured actors, Sabryn Rock and Tyrone Benskin, and a best direction nomination for Mumbi Tindyebwa Otu.

Also in the running for best production in the general theatre division are Mirvish’s “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” Factory Theatre’s “Wildfire” and “Orphans for the Czar” and Cliff Cardinal’s “radical retelling” of “As You Like It” from Crow’s Theatre.

Top musical contenders include “Sweeney Todd” from Talk is Free Theatre with 13 nominations and Mirvish’s “& Juliet” with eight nods.

Presented by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, the Doras recognize excellence in local theatre, dance and opera.

The awards will be presented at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre on Sept. 19.
