Canadians want to know when we’ll be offered the new Moderna bivalent COVID-19 vaccine, which has just been approved by Health Canada.

On Thursday, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos outlined the timeline for deliveries.

“780,000 doses of that new bivalent vaccine will be delivered to Canada tomorrow (Friday),” Duclos explained, “A total of 10.5-million doses will be delivered by the end of September. As usual, these vaccines will be delivered quickly and free of charge to provinces and territories.”

Duclos explained the willingness of Canadians to get boosted will be a crucial part of fending off another potentially large wave of COVID-19 infections in the fall.

This latest vaccine doesn’t directly target the most dominant subvariants (BA.4 and BA.5) circulating in Canada now, but rather the first BA.1 Omicron variant.

It also protects against the original COVID strain and will first be rolled out to the most vulnerable Ontarians, such as those living and working in long-term care.

Ontario’s health minister Sylvia Jones says a wider rollout plan, beyond those most at risk, will be made public once additional supply is on the way.
