The captain of the ship that caused, at the time, the worst environmental disaster in US history, has died.

Joseph Hazelwood accepted responsibility for running the Exxon Valdez aground and leaking million of gallons of oil in Alaska’s Prince William Sound in March, 1989.

Hazelwood, was acquitted of operating a vessel while intoxicated but convicted of negligently discharging oil.

The spill blackened 24-hundred kilometres of Alaska’s coast, killed 250,000 birds, more than 3,000 seals and sea otters and 22 killer whales.

Hazelwood died at his home on Long Island, N. Y. from complications of COVID-19 and cancer.

He was 75.
