The taps are in place, the beer’s been chilled, the roast pork knuckle is all crisped up and after a three year, pandemic interruption, it’s Oktoberfest in Munich.

Munich’s mayor says the return of the city’s hallmark tourist event is “beautiful.”

However, brewers and visitors are under pressure from inflation in ways they could hardly imagine at the last Oktoberfest in 2019.

Energy, barley, hops, steel barrels, even paper and glue for labels, have all gone up in price as record inflation has taken hold across Europe.

The price of one of the hefty mugs that revelers will hoist has gone up by 15 per cent.

The event kicks off tomorrow, Saturday September 17 and runs through Monday October 3rd.

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest “volksfest” with some 7 million people expected to attend.
