Former Green leader Elizabeth May is pleased Parks Canada and other government departments are working with Indigenous nations in her B-C riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands to help restore ancient walled sea gardens that line some Island beaches.
She says the once mysterious meandering rock walls along Gulf Islands shorelines were built and used by local Indigenous Peoples to trap and cultivate clams, mussels and other sea food.
At least one of the traditional sea garden sites is located on Russell Island, just south of Salt Spring Island in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve.
Indigenous leaders hope to be given approval for clam harvesting at the sea garden site on Salt Spring Island’s coast as well as Russell Island in Gulf Islands National Park. Both are currently undergoing a comprehensive restoration process.
