23 people are in St. Catharines  hospital after a hazardous materials incident at an auto plant called THK Rhythm Automotive.

“Three members of a team working in that facility were exposed both from a respiratory system plus skin contact and then there was another 20 nearby members also affected by that cloud,” said
Fire Chief Dave Tupper. “A third party contractor doing work at the THK automotive facility, a crew there accidentally hit a valve which opened up the hydrochloric acid vat and 5 litres of acid spilled and then transformed into a vapour cloud.”

The three people exposed directly are in stable condition in hospital. Another nine went to hospital with minor exposure and 10 asymptomatic individuals — who had limited exposure to the leak — were taken to hospital on a city bus.
