Just shy of a Category Five, Hurricane Ian is rapidly approaching Florida’s southwest coast, packing top winds of 250 kilometres per hour.

The massive storm is on track to slam ashore somewhere north of Fort Myers and south of Tampa.

More than 2.5 million people were under mandatory evacuation orders, but by law no one could be forced to flee. Now, Governor Ron DeSantis is urging residents to hunker down and weather out the storm.

Damaging winds and rain are expected to blast the heavily populated Gulf Coast, with the Naples to Sarasota region at highest risk of a devastating storm surge.

Florida Division of Emergency Management director Kevin Guthrie says Ian is expected to make landfall Wednesday afternoon.

“This will cause life-threatening storm surge and flooding, tropical storm force winds, will be felt throughout the entire state and even isolated tornadoes.”

Governor Ron DeSantis is urging residents to hunker down and weather out the storm, similar to that of a tornado.
