Minimum wage in Ontario is going up today.

The general minimum wage is increasing by 50 cents to $15.50 while those under the age of 18 will now be paid $14.60

The move was originally announced by the Ford government in April, and specifically by Labour Minister Monte McNaughton.

The 50-cent increase comes after the annual inflation rate reached a nearly 40-year high in June and although it has slowed since, Statistics Canada reported in August that grocery prices rose at the fastest rate since 1981.

Critics say that it’s still not a livable wage, and especially now given that the country has been dealing with out-of-control inflation.
