She was the indigenous activist and actor who appeared at the 1973 Academy Awards to reject Marlon Brando’s win for the Godfather.

Sacheen Littlefeather has died.

At an Academy event last month in Los Angeles, Littlefeather said she was “representing all Indigenous voices when she refused the Oscar on Brando’s behalf.”

Her death was announced by the Academy Sunday.

The cause of death was not immediately known but it came just weeks after the Academy apologized for her treatment.  She later told The Hollywood Reporter she was “stunned” by the apology and never thought it would ever come.

Sacheen Littlefeather was 75.
