The Canadian photographer whose now famous, intimate shots of Marilyn Monroe taken a year before her death has died at 88.

Toronto-born Douglas Kirkland died at his home in Los Angeles. No cause was given.

His career jump-started when he was assigned a photo session with Monroe featuring the actress wrapped in white bed sheets that became the most memorable ones taken of her.

In an interview with Classical FM’s Mark Wigmore, Kirkland spoke about those iconic photos.

“At a certain point after we’d been talking for 45 minutes to an hour, she said I know what we need, a bed, a white silk sheet and I’ll be in there with nothing but that white silk sheet,” recalled Kirkland. “Wow, for a boy who came from Toronto and raised in Fort Erie, this was a buzz!”

Munroe’s 1957 Magnavox TV is on display at the MZTV Museum of Television here at the ZoomerPlex in Liberty Village.
