This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to jailed Belarus rights activist Ales Bialiatski and the Russian human rights group Memorial and the Ukrainian organization Center for Civil Liberties.

The winners were announced this morning in Oslo by Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The 60 year old Bialiatski was instrumental in helping spark the democracy movement that began in Belarus in the 1980s. He has been in prison since 2021 on charges of tax evasion widely considered to be politically motivated.

The prizes carry a cash award of 10 million Swedish kronor — nearly 900-thousand-dollars U-S — and will be handed out on December 10th.

Wrapping things up, the 2022 Nobel Prize for economics will be announced on Monday.
