A 77-year-old Oakville man is dead after a flying wheel crashed into a vehicle on the Queen Elizabeth Tuesday afternoon.

It happened on the border of Mississauga and Oakville in the eastbound lanes near Winston Churchill Boulevard.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says an elderly woman passenger was able to bring the white Mercedes to a stop on the shoulder of the highway.

“Witnesses reported seeing a tire and wheel assembly coming off a trailer, it was actually a boat trailer that was being pulled by a pick up truck that was travelling westbound and investigators have located that trailer at a marina and the driver has spoken to police and we are still investigating the reason for this wheel to have come off.”

Schmidt said the wheel hit the white Mercedes first before bouncing down the roadway and striking two other vehicles but there were no other injuries.

Police say it’s possible the driver was unaware the tire had fallen off.

The Toronto bound eastbound lanes of the QEW at Ford Drive were closed for a few hours before reopening late afternoon.
