According to the former chair of Ottawa’s police board, the chief of police told her in late January that the “Freedom Convoy” protesters would be lucky to stay for more than one weekend.
Diane Deans, a former police board chair and current Ottawa city councillor, testified Wednesday at a federal inquiry into the government’s use of the Emergencies Act.
According to documents filed with the commission, former police chief Peter Sloly told the police board on January 26th during a briefing that trucks were expected to arrive in Ottawa that weekend and may stay for a “extended period.”
However, Deans claims that the chief told her in a one-on-one conversation that the protesters would be gone by the following Monday.
She claims the chief did not provide her or the rest of the board with specific intelligence reports.
Sloly resigned as police chief three weeks later, and Deans was removed as chair of the police board by her city council colleagues.
