The nine-member panel has sent a letter to the former president’s lawyers, demanding his testimony by November 14 as well as outlining a request for corresponding documents; including personal communications between Trump and members of Congress as well as extremist groups.
”We recognize that a subpoena to a former President is a significant and historic action,” Chair Bennie Thompson and Vice-Chair Liz Cheney wrote.
”We do not take this actin lightly.”
It’s unclear how Trump and his lawyers will respond as he could comply or negotiate with the committee, announce he’ll defy the subpoena or ignore it, or he could also go to court to try and stop it.
All nine members of the panel – seven Democrats and two Republicans – voted in support of the subpoena in a vote last week.
Meanwhile, longtime ally Steve Bannon is been sentenced to four months in prison for defying a subpoena from the same committee.
The 68-year-old Bannon is free while he appeals the verdict.
