Marine archaeologists in Sweden report that they have discovered the sister ship of a famous 17th century warship that sank on its maiden voyage and is now on display in a Stockholm museum.

After more than 300 years under water in Stockholm harbour, the wreck of the royal warship Vasa was raised in 1961, remarkably well preserved.

The Vasa Museum displays its intricate wooden carvings.

It was built around the same time as its sister Applet (Apple).

The Applet, unlike the Vasa, which sank minutes after leaving port in 1628, remained in service for three decades.

It was sunk in 1659 as part of an underwater barrier intended to protect Stockholm from enemy fleets.
