Germany’s health minister has announced plans to decriminalize the possession of up to 30 grams (1 ounce) of cannabis and allow adults to purchase the substance for recreational purposes.
To combat the black market, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach stated that the plan calls for the sale of cannabis to adults at licenced outlets.
However, the plan approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday is still in doubt because the government wants to ensure that it is compliant with European Union and international law.
The legalization of controlled cannabis sales is one of several reforms outlined in last year’s coalition agreement between the three socially liberal parties that comprise Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government.
