The first of several organizers of last winter’s ”Freedom Convoy” has testified at the public inquiry investigating the Trudeau government’s use of the Emergencies Act to end the protest.
Chris Barber says he was contacted by a fellow truck driver, Brigitte Belton, about organizing some type of protest against the vaccine mandates for truck drivers crossing the border with the U.S.
After that he says things came together quickly and organically through social media.
Barber says he thought he would be led to one of two staging areas at parks near Parliament Hill, where he and others would demonstrate against the COVID-19 mandates.
Instead he was escorted by police in his truck right onto Wellington Street, that was already packed with other rigs.
”I don’t know how things went so wrong when we first arrived,” Barber told the inquiry.
He adds it would have been better if the trucks were led off the main streets right away.
”Occupying or parking all over the city was never part of why we came,” Barber says.
He was arrested February 17 and charged with mischief, obstructing police, and counselling others to commit mischief and intimidation.
He’s co-accused with another organizer, Tamara Lich, and their trial’s expected to take place in 2023.
