Despite calls to reinstate mask mandates in some indoor settings, Toronto’s medical officer of health says she does not feel that is necessary just yet.

“So at this point in time, we’re suggesting continued adherence to provincial guidance,” Dr. Eileen de Villa told members of Toronto’s Board of Health who’ve passed a motion asking Dr. de Villa to urgently explore all avenues toward reissuing mask mandates, starting with schools.

The request on Tuesday came a day after Dr. Lindy Samson, Chief of Staff and Chief Medical Officer at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), urged a broad return to indoor masking as the flu, COVID-19 and the childhood virus, RSV, circulate among young people.

“And the overwhelming majority of those children are coming to care because they’re having difficulties breathing or having fever or having challenges because of viral respiratory infections,” Dr. Samson explained to CP24, “I’ve never seen it like this before and I’m really worried.”

At the provincial level, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore has indicated recently there could be further recommendations for wearing masks, but so far he has resisted the idea of re-instituting mask mandates.
