Ontario is over capacity with pediatric ICU beds.
The province has 112 ICU beds, but there are currently 122 children in need of one according to Critical Care Services Ontario.
Children’s hospitals have been inundated with sick patients for weeks.
Last week, Ontario Health directed general hospitals to accept children 14 and older who need critical care in an effort to ease the burden on pediatric facilities.
The hospitals are reporting the majority of children in ICU are 5 and younger.
In a statement, Health Minister Sylvia Jones says “Ontario Health provided direction for all pediatric hospitals to have a surge plan in place.”
