As the city prepares to host a major United Nations conference next month, Montreal’s mayor has issued a challenge to other cities to commit to protecting biodiversity.

The “Montreal pledge,” Valerie Plante announced on Wednesday, is made up of 15 actions, including increasing protected green space, reducing pesticide use by at least two-thirds, and working to eliminate plastic waste.

She says she believes that cities are at the forefront of biodiversity decline and must take action to reverse it.

Plante adds that several cities, including Paris, Milan, Buenos Aires, and Barcelona, have already signed on to the pledge.

From December 7 to 19, Montreal will host a major U.N. conference on biodiversity.

Parallel to the main conference, a summit for cities and subnational governments will be held.
