As Giving Tuesday approaches, a special music program inside long term care homes is looking for support to bring some cheer back into the lives of seniors who suffered through years of severe isolation and losing friends to COVID.

“We are now a charitable organization that’s dedicated to reducing the rates of social isolation experienced by seniors living in long term care,” said Julian Powell, founder and president of Music Share For Seniors.

“We provide a survey ahead of time that triggers memories by offering a bunch of musical genres, artists, different suggestions like that.”

“We will take those music requests and we build personalized playlists on Spotify for each individual participant,” says Powell.

The program started in 2017 but COVID was a big speed bump because the program works best when in person and face to face.

Now back up and running , Julian says the results have been encouraging and it’s now in 12 long term care homes in the GTA reaching 240 residents, many with dementia.

“We look for smiles, we look for singing along, we look for clapping along to the music,” adds Powell.

Giving Tuesday – the world’s largest generosity movement- falls on November 29th this year.

“We can accept donations, and provide tax deductible receipts which we’re really excited about.”
