More volunteers and rescuers have been sent out to look for the missing and dead following an earthquake in Indonesia that claimed at least 271 lives.

The death toll was almost certain to increase because there were dozens of unaccounted for people and some distant regions were still inaccessible.

To help the already massive search operation, more than 12,000 army personnel were sent in.

Heavy rains on Wednesday made the landslide locations unstable, so the operation was put on hold.

They’ll start looking again early on Thursday.

More than 2,000 people were hurt, and many of them were resting on stretchers and beds in tents outside overflowing hospitals while being hooked up to IVs.

Java, Indonesia’s heavily populated main island, was hit late Monday afternoon by a moderate 5.6 magnitude earthquake.
