Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he was “absolutely serene and confident” in his decision to invoke the Emergencies Act.
Trudeau was the final witness to testify at the public inquiry investigating his government’s use of the act to clear blockades in Ottawa and at several border crossings.
He says he made the right decision, painting a picture of Canada teetering on the edge of violence during the convoy protests.
Trudeau also says there was a disconnect between messages his aides were seeing about the Freedom Convoy protest, and the assurances coming from Ottawa police.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials had expressed serious concern about the impact the “Freedom Convoy” protests and border blockades were having on cross-border trade and key Canada-U.S. supply chains… most notably the automotive industry.
The Public Order Emergency Commission had already heard from seven Liberal ministers about why the Emergencies Act was invoked, including testimony from Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland on Thursday.
The inquiry is mandatory under oversight provisions in the Emergencies Act.
Commissioner Paul Rouleau is expected to deliver a final report to Parliament by early next year.
