The niece of Iran’s supreme leader is urging people to put pressure on their governments to sever ties with Tehran.
According to the rights watchdog HRANA, located in the United States, Farideh Moradkhani, whose uncle is Ali al-Khamenei, made the appeal in a video statement that was distributed following her detention on November 23rd.
Moradkhani is a long-time activist and the closest member of the supreme leader’s family to be arrested.
The branch of the family has long been against Khamenei, and Moradkhani has previously served time in prison for her activism.
The 22-year-old Mahsa Amini’s death while in police detention ignited the protests, which have now grown into the nation’s most significant challenge to the status quo since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
