The founder of a virtual care platform says his service has seen a mass exodus of doctors after changes to fees for virtual services kicked in this week in Ontario.

An agreement earlier this year between the Ontario Medical Association  and the province resulted in drastically reduced fees paid to doctors for many virtual visits.

Dr. William Cherniak with the platform Rocket Doctor says as a result, 85 % of Ontario doctors are leaving or discontinuing their services with his company, that serves as a virtual walk-in clinic.

Cherniak said he previously had 25 doctors providing care for up to 600 patients a day but now there’s one doctor providing care to 20 patients or less.

Services like his offer greater accessibility for patients in rural areas as well as those who can’t find available family doctors.
