Canada’s first full-scale electric vehicle plant officially opened today in Ingersoll, Ontario.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says electric delivery vans have already started rolling off the line. Trudeau was joined by Premier Doug Ford.
“The market dictates and the market is going to be EV,” said Ford. “Don’t kid yourself, I’m going to be on the phone over the next week with the head of Purolator, the head of UPS, head of FexEx, and other businesses encouraging them to buy the EV’s right here from the CAMI plant.”
Both levels of government invested $259 million toward GM’s $2-billion to transform the Ingersoll plant and overhaul its Oshawa plant to make it EV-ready.
The Ingersoll plant is expected to manufacture 50,000 electric vehicles by 2025. Canada intends to ban the sale of new internal-combustion engines in passenger vehicles by 2035.
