Toronto’s mayor is backing Mississauga’s mayor for standing up for cities.

John Tory has posted on twitter that “more housing needs to be built but insults and fighting in public doesn’t put one more shovel in the ground.”

Mayor Tory goes on to say, “cities are all prepared to be enthusiastic partners with the province and with the federal government when it comes to getting more housing built faster but it requires consultation, co-operation and respect.”

He says “we simply have to pledge ourselves to do those things and to elevate the tone of the discussion.”

Tory’s comments come after Premier Doug Ford took a shot at some Ontario mayors, namely Mississauga’s Bonnie Crombie, for opposition to his government’s housing development plans.

“I know we have a few mayors that don’t want to play in the sandbox, one being Mayor Crombie, and I don’t know what her issue is. We want to work cooperatively and collaboratively with you but we need to get on board and start moving forward and stop the whining and complaining that I hear,” Ford told reporters.

In response, Mayor Crombie released a statement, which says she’s not whining but simply doing her job to stand up for her residents.

She says the impact of the provincial government’s legislation that limits the city’s ability to collect fees from developers means Mississauga home owners will pay between 5 and 10 percent more in property taxes each year over the next ten years.
