Mayor John Tory is asking staff to draft a  housing action plan  that could lead to significant changes to existing zoning regulations.

A motion to be considered by council next week proposes the city “achieve or exceed” a new provincial target for 285,000 new homes in Toronto over the next decade.

“This will hurry up housing, it will cut red tape, and it will speed up approval times and all those are things we recognize a city government must do,” says Tory. “It will streamline the process to get more housing built faster but without sacrificing the kind of quality that Torontonians expect from us.”

Tory says the focus should be in 15 areas that include amending zoning to increase density in neighbourhoods and and create transition zones between commercial and residential areas.

Included in the plan is a new bylaw to permit multi-tenant homes or rooming houses city-wide.
