There is a federal by-election this Monday and it will mark the first time voters will get a chance to vote for the Conservatives since Pierre Poilievre became party leader.

Voters go to the polls in Mississauga-Lakeshore, to replace Liberal member of Parliament who held the riding stepped down.

Sven Spengemann stepped down in May to accept a role with the United Nations.

Running for the Liberals is former MPP Charles Sousa, who represented the area provincially from 2007 to 2018 and previously served in the provincial cabinets of Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne, including as Minister of Finance from 2013 to 2018.

Ron Chhinzer, a police officer in the area, is the Tory candidate and party insiders are keeping expectations of winning low.

They cite an expected low voter turnout given the byelection is just two weeks before Christmas.
