Dictionary.com has chosen its word of the year and the word is…

“Woman.”

It was chosen because the term was “inseparable from the story of 2022.”

Dictionary.com reports interest spiked during the March hearings to confirm the first black woman to the US Supreme Court.

“Woman” was also used frequently during other newsworthy events of 2022 including: the US Supreme Court’s decision to terminate the national right to abortion, the death of Queen Elizabeth, the retirement of tennis legend Serena Williams, the equal pay deal secured by the US women’s soccer team and gender equality protests in Iran.

Woman is defined by the website as “an adult female person.”

The online lexicon concludes “woman” reflects how the intersection of gender, identity and language dominates the current cultural conversation.
