It was a symbolic move and a resolution that holds no weight.

Toronto city councillors voted on Thursday to ask Premier Doug Ford to kill the legislation that gives Mayor John Tory expanded strong mayor powers.

While the vote, initiated in a motion by Ward 3 Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Amber Morley, cannot force the governing PCs at Queen’s Park to take action, its 17-8 margin is a stinging rebuke to Mayor Tory who has defended his request for these powers.

Council also adopted Councillor Josh Matlow’s motion asking Tory, and future Toronto mayors, not to use any power that allows them to pass motions with less than 50 percent support of council.

Former Toronto City Councillor Karen Stintz told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with guest host Jane Brown, the strong mayor powers are a slap in the face to democracy and to this newly elected city council.

“To observe this council that is now the most diverse council that the city’s ever had and to be at the same time so disempowered when it comes to such an important issue (housing), to be it’s discouraging,” Stintz explained.

Earlier this week, Mayor Tory insisted that “nobody” is talking to him about the strong mayor powers known as Bill 39.
